BYD, Changan, Geely, Haval: a comparison for Russian buyers
Detailed comparison of the four leading Chinese auto brands: BYD, Changan, Geely and Haval. Reliability, prices, lineup, and cost of ownership.
Four titans of Chinese automaking: who's who
The Russian car market in 2026 is a market of Chinese brands. BYD, Changan, Geely and Haval lead in sales and form the core choice for buyers. Each of these manufacturers has walked its own path from budget knock-offs to technologically mature, world-class vehicles.
But which brand is right for you? It's not a trivial question: similar price tags hide fundamentally different engineering philosophies, different approaches to comfort, reliability and total cost of ownership. At KDL Group we work with all four brands every day — buying cars directly in China, delivering them, and clearing customs. Below is an honest comparison based on real experience and market data.
BYD: the electric leader with ambition
History and philosophy
BYD (Build Your Dreams) was founded in 1995 as a battery manufacturer. That specialization defined the company's future: today BYD is the world's largest producer of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, having overtaken Tesla in sales volume. Warren Buffett's 2008 investment in BYD was no accident — the company bet on electrification long before it became mainstream.
BYD's philosophy is vertical integration. The company produces its own batteries (the famous Blade Battery based on lithium iron phosphate), electric motors, power electronics, and even semiconductors. This lets it control quality at every stage and keep prices competitive.
2026 lineup in Russia
- BYD Seal — electric sedan, a Tesla Model 3 competitor. Up to 390 kW, range up to 550 km, 0–100 km/h in 3.8 seconds.
- BYD Song Plus DM-i / EV — compact crossover available as hybrid or full EV. One of the brand's bestsellers.
- BYD Han — flagship sedan with premium equipment and up to 600 km of range.
- BYD Tang — full-size family crossover with AWD.
- BYD Dolphin — urban electric hatchback, the most affordable model in the lineup.
- BYD Atto 3 (Yuan Plus) — compact electric crossover for the city.
Russian dealer price range
From 2,400,000 to 6,500,000 rubles depending on model and trim.
Reliability
Blade (LFP) batteries are considered among the safest and most durable on the market — they are not prone to thermal runaway and retain over 80% capacity after 3,000 charge cycles. Owner reports show BYD electric models are highly stable: the absence of an ICE and gearbox dramatically reduces potential failure points.
Weak spots: adaptation to Russian winters (range drops by 20–30% below −15 °C), limited charging infrastructure outside major cities.
Service costs
BYD EVs are far cheaper to service than ICE cars — no oil changes, filters, or belts. Routine service is limited to brakes, suspension, and cabin filter. Average service bill: 8,000–15,000 rubles. However, in case of major repairs, parts can be expensive due to the limited dealer network.
Changan: balance of price and technology
History and philosophy
Changan is one of the oldest carmakers in China, with a history dating back to 1862 (the company originally manufactured weapons). Its automotive division has been developing since 1984. Changan consistently invests in its own R&D — six centers, including labs in Japan, the UK and Italy.
Changan's philosophy is technological independence at a reasonable price. The company doesn't chase a premium image but bets on maximum equipment in every price segment. The UNI (Universe) line is a striking example: design and tech on par with competitors that cost 20–30% more.
2026 lineup in Russia
Crossovers:- Changan CS35 Plus — subcompact crossover, one of the most affordable models.
- Changan UNI-S (CS55 Plus) — compact crossover with progressive design, from 2,530,000 RUB.
- Changan CS75 Plus / CS75 Plus New — midsize crossover, the brand's bestseller in Russia.
- Changan UNI-T — youthful coupe-crossover with a dynamic character.
- Changan UNI-K — flagship crossover with AWD.
- Changan Alsvin — budget sedan from 1,500,000 RUB.
- Changan Eado Plus — midsize sedan.
- Changan Lamore — stylish sedan with modern equipment.
- Changan UNI-V — sport liftback.
- Changan Hunter Plus — business-class pickup.
Russian dealer price range
From 1,500,000 (Alsvin) to 4,200,000 RUB (UNI-K top trim).
Reliability
Changan offers a 5-year warranty — one of the longest in the segment, signaling the manufacturer's confidence. Blue Whale-series turbocharged engines show good durability: CS75 Plus owners report no major powertrain issues at 80,000–120,000 km.
Weak spots: the 7-speed DCT robotic transmission required adaptation in early versions, but current calibrations work much better. Paint quality is average — protective film or ceramic coating is recommended.
Service costs
Service interval — every 10,000 km. Total scheduled-service cost over the warranty period (5 years / 60,000 km) is around 150,000–190,000 RUB, or 7–9% of the vehicle price. One of the best ratios in the segment. Parts are accessible and relatively inexpensive.
Geely: the Chinese Volvo
History and philosophy
Geely was founded in 1986 by Li Shufu, an entrepreneur who started by making refrigerators. In 2010 Geely made the strategic acquisition that transformed the company: Volvo Cars. Since then, Swedish engineering has been integrated into Geely's development. The CMA platform, on which many Geely models are built, was developed jointly with Volvo.
Geely's philosophy is "Swedish quality at Chinese prices." The company also owns Zeekr (premium EVs), Lynk & Co and Polestar, allowing top-down technology transfer.
2026 lineup in Russia
Crossovers:- Geely Coolray — compact urban crossover, one of the bestsellers in Russia.
- Geely Cityray — new-generation crossover-hatchback.
- Geely Atlas — midsize crossover with elegant design.
- Geely EX5 EM-i — hybrid crossover with expressive styling.
- Geely Monjaro — flagship midsize crossover with a 2.0T engine and AWD.
- Geely Okavango — seven-seat flagship for large families.
- Geely Emgrand — city sedan, the brand's most affordable model.
- Geely Preface — business sedan with modern equipment.
Russian dealer price range
From 2,045,000 (Emgrand) to 4,800,000 RUB (Monjaro top trim).
Reliability
Geely consistently ranks at the top of Chinese brand reliability surveys. Owners report good engine and transmission durability up to 150,000 km with timely maintenance. Volvo-codeveloped platforms provide a high level of passive safety.
Weak spots: sound insulation in budget trims (Emgrand, base Coolray) lags behind more expensive competitors. Real-world fuel consumption of 1.5T turbo engines in city driving is 15–20% above stated figures.
Service costs
Service interval — 10,000 km. A developed dealer network ensures good parts availability. Average service visit costs 12,000–25,000 RUB depending on the schedule. Over 100,000 km the owner spends about 180,000–220,000 RUB on maintenance.
Haval: the time-tested SUV
History and philosophy
Haval is a sub-brand of Great Wall Motors, spun off as a standalone marque in 2013. Great Wall has been on the Russian market longer than any Chinese competitor and was the first Chinese carmaker to build a full plant in Russia — in the Tula region. Haval is the only Chinese brand with local Russian assembly.
Haval's philosophy — "crossovers and SUVs for any conditions." The company focuses exclusively on the SUV segment and refines each model to a serious off-road and durability standard.
2026 lineup in Russia
- Haval H3 — subcompact urban crossover.
- Haval M6 — compact crossover, one of the brand's most affordable, from 2,050,000 RUB.
- Haval Dargo — midsize crossover with rugged styling, 2.0T engine (192 hp), 7-speed DCT.
- Haval H5 — classic body-on-frame SUV for serious off-road.
- Haval H7 — midsize crossover with enhanced comfort.
- Haval H9 — full-size body-on-frame SUV, brand flagship with selectable AWD and locking differentials.
- Haval H10 — 2026 newcomer, large crossover on a modern platform.
Russian dealer price range
From 2,050,000 (M6) to 5,500,000 RUB (H9 top trim).
Reliability
Haval is one of the most proven Chinese brands on the Russian market. Jolion and H9 consistently rank among the most reliable cars. The body-on-frame construction of the H5 and H9 delivers durability comparable to a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. The Tula plant means Russian warranty coverage and a developed service network.
Weak spots: 7DCT robotic transmissions in heavy city driving (traffic, frequent start-stops) can feel less than smooth. Real-world 2.0T fuel consumption — 11–14 L/100 km in the city.
Service costs
Thanks to local assembly and the broadest dealer network among Chinese brands, Haval offers the most predictable cost of ownership. Service visits — 10,000–22,000 RUB. Parts available from Russian warehouses. Over 100,000 km the owner spends 160,000–200,000 RUB on maintenance.

Which brand for which buyer: four scenarios
For families with children: Geely or Haval
If you need a roomy car for a family with two or three children, look at the Geely Okavango (7 seats) or Haval H7 / H9. The Okavango offers comfort on par with European competitors thanks to the Volvo platform. The Haval H9 is the choice for those who go off-road regularly: ladder frame, locking AWD, and a huge cargo area.
For families with one child and mostly urban use, the BYD Song Plus is a great fit — a quiet EV with a spacious cabin and minimal fuel costs.
For city and daily commuting: BYD or Geely
In urban use, BYD EVs are unmatched in cost per kilometer. The BYD Dolphin is the ideal city EV: compact, agile, with zero fuel use. If charging infrastructure is a problem for you, look at the Geely Coolray — compact, economical, with a developed service network.
For off-road and rural travel: Haval
Haval has no peer here. The Haval H5 is a body-on-frame SUV with a low range and a serious off-road toolkit. The Haval H9 is the flagship for expeditions and off-road. Neither BYD, Geely nor Changan offer body-on-frame models with real off-road potential.
For a tight budget: Changan
Changan offers the lowest entry point — the Alsvin from 1,500,000 RUB. Even budget models include infotainment, climate control and safety systems. The CS35 Plus is a great first crossover at a sensible price. The UNI line (UNI-T, UNI-S, UNI-V) offers design and equipment matching competitors that cost 20–30% more.
Cost from China vs. Russian dealer
This is the key question many clients come to us with. The gap between the Chinese price and the Russian dealer price ranges from 15 to 40% — depending on model and current market conditions.

Important notes
- Cars imported from China have Chinese-spec equipment: infotainment menus in Chinese (resolved by reflashing), trim differences from Russian versions.
- When buying through us, you get the full document package for GIBDD registration.
- The Russian dealer warranty does not cover parallel-import vehicles. We provide our own warranty and assist with service.
Bottom line: which brand to choose
There is no single "best" brand — there is the brand that best fits your needs:
- BYD — if you're ready for an EV and live in a city with developed charging. Lowest cost per km, leading-edge tech, but limited Russian service network.
- Changan — if you want maximum value. Widest lineup, lowest entry point, good reliability, and a long warranty.
- Geely — if safety and engineering matter most. Volvo tech in every model, a good dealer network, predictable reliability.
- Haval — if you need a real SUV or value the most developed service infrastructure. The only brand with a Russian plant, the broadest dealer network, time-proven models.
