How to buy a car from China in 2026: the complete guide
Step-by-step guide to importing a car from China: model selection, inspection, delivery, customs clearance, SBKTS, eVIN. Real prices and timelines from KDL Group.
Why importing a car from China makes sense in 2026
KDL Group is based in Hunchun, on the Chinese side of the border, and has been importing turnkey Chinese vehicles for several years. Hundreds of cars have moved through us, and one thing is clear: the Chinese auto industry in 2026 is on a completely different level.
Five years ago, many viewed Chinese cars with skepticism. Today BYD outsells Tesla in EVs, and Geely owns Volvo. Build quality, technology, safety — all are now on par with European and Japanese competitors.
But the main draw is price. Buying directly from China saves 300,000 to 500,000 rubles compared to Russian dealers. On some models the gap reaches a million. It's not magic — you simply remove intermediaries and the dealer markup from the chain.
This guide covers the entire process step by step: from model selection to GIBDD registration. Concrete numbers, real timelines, no fluff.
Step 1: Choosing a model
The first thing to decide is which car you need. The Chinese market is huge, and not every model is equally profitable to import to Russia.
Popular brands and models in 2026
BYD — the undisputed leader. World-class EVs and hybrids. Flagship sedan BYD Han L EV starts at 209,800 yuan in China (about 2.7M RUB). Compact Dolphin — from 96,800 yuan. Song Plus crossover — from 129,800 yuan. Chery — reliable classic. Tiggo 7 Plus from 91,900 yuan (about 1.2M RUB), Tiggo 8 Pro — from 119,900 yuan. Chery is well-known in Russia, parts are available. Geely / Zeekr — premium tier. Geely Monjaro, Zeekr 001 and Zeekr 7X — vehicles with excellent sound insulation, advanced ADAS, and design you won't be embarrassed by. Haval — proven crossovers. Jolion sells in China from 90,000 yuan (about 1.15M RUB). At Russian dealers — from 2,049,000 RUB. The gap is obvious. Changan — excellent price-to-quality ratio. UNI-V, UNI-T, CS75 Plus — solid mid-tier with rich equipment. Li Auto — family hybrid crossovers. Li L7, Li L8, Li L9 — large, comfortable, with extended range thanks to a gasoline range extender. NIO — premium EVs with a unique battery-swap system. ET5, ES6, ET7 — for those who want maximum technology. What to consider when choosing
- Engine displacement and power. Cars with engines up to 3 L and up to 160 hp qualify for the reduced utilization fee for individuals. This is crucial for total cost.
- Powertrain type. EVs have no displacement-based duty — they have no engine. But the utilization fee has its own rules.
- Russian parts availability. BYD, Chery, Haval, Geely — no parts issues. Less common brands may pose problems.
- Russian-conditions compatibility. Check battery operating temperature (for EVs), heated seats / mirrors / steering wheel.
Step 2: Inspecting the vehicle
Buying a car in another country always carries risk if you skip inspection. Here is what we do for each car.
VIN and history
Every Chinese car has a VIN. We use it to check:
- Accident history — via Chinese databases
- Real mileage — cross-referenced with service records
- Number of owners — single ownership is always better
- Encumbrances — liens, loans, restrictions
Physical inspection
We are based in Hunchun and inspect every car before purchase. We check:
- Body — chips, dents, repair traces
- Paint — with a thickness gauge
- Chassis — play, leaks, brake condition
- Electronics — all systems, infotainment, cameras
- Battery (for EVs) — remaining capacity, cycle count
Photo and video report
For each car the client receives a detailed report: 50–70 photos and a video walkaround with commentary. You see the car as if you were standing next to it.
Step 3: Purchase and payment
Payment schemes
Several working options:
1. Full prepayment — the simplest. You wire the funds, we buy the car. For clients who have worked with us before.
2. Staged payment — 30–50% deposit to lock the car, balance after inspection and before shipping. The most popular scheme.
3. Letter of credit — for those who want maximum protection. Funds are frozen at the bank and released to the seller only after delivery confirmation.
Legal documentation
We sign a services agreement with each client, specifying:
- Exact vehicle specifications
- Delivery timelines
- Liability of the parties
- Refund terms
- Warranty obligations
All numbers are transparent. You know up front what the car, delivery, customs clearance and each add-on service cost.
Step 4: Logistics and delivery
Main routes
Hunchun – Kraskino – Vladivostok is our primary route. Hunchun is 60 km from the Russian border. It's the closest major Chinese city to Russia with a developed auto market.- Car carrier through Kraskino: 3–5 days. The fastest and cheapest option.
- Sea (Dalian/Qingdao – Vladivostok): 7–10 days. Suitable for batches or oversize vehicles.
- Carrier across Russia (Vladivostok – your city): 7–14 days depending on region. Vladivostok – Moscow takes 12–14 days.
Delivery cost
- Hunchun – Vladivostok: 50,000 to 80,000 RUB (depending on vehicle type)
- Vladivostok – Moscow (carrier): 120,000 to 180,000 RUB
- Vladivostok – Novosibirsk: 60,000 to 90,000 RUB
Insurance
Every vehicle is insured during transport. Damage in transit is covered up to full repair cost.
Step 5: Customs clearance
The most complex and expensive stage. But knowing the rules makes it predictable.
What customs clearance includes
For an individual importing a car for personal use, you pay:
1. Unified customs duty — the main payment
2. Utilization fee — mandatory state fee
3. Customs processing fee — for paperwork
Unified duty for individuals
For new cars (under 3 years old), the rate depends on price and engine displacement. The greater of two values applies:
| Vehicle value | % of value | Per cm³ |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 8,500 EUR | 54% | 2.5 EUR/cm³ |
| 8,500 – 16,700 EUR | 48% | 3.5 EUR/cm³ |
| 16,700 – 42,300 EUR | 48% | 5.5 EUR/cm³ |
| 42,300 – 84,500 EUR | 48% | 7.5 EUR/cm³ |
| 84,500 – 169,000 EUR | 48% | 15 EUR/cm³ |
| Over 169,000 EUR | 48% | 20 EUR/cm³ |
For 3–5-year-old cars — fixed rate per cm³:
| Engine displacement | Rate |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,000 cm³ | 1.5 EUR/cm³ |
| 1,000 – 1,500 cm³ | 1.7 EUR/cm³ |
| 1,500 – 1,800 cm³ | 2.5 EUR/cm³ |
| 1,800 – 2,300 cm³ | 2.7 EUR/cm³ |
| 2,300 – 3,000 cm³ | 3.0 EUR/cm³ |
| Over 3,000 cm³ | 3.6 EUR/cm³ |
Utilization fee in 2026
From January 1, 2026, the utilization fee is indexed up by 10–20%. But for individuals importing a car for personal use with engine up to 3 L and power up to 160 hp, reduced rates apply:
- Car under 3 years: 3,400 RUB
- Car over 3 years: 5,200 RUB
If power exceeds 160 hp or displacement is over 3 L, the utilization fee is calculated at commercial rates. The base 20,000 RUB is multiplied by a coefficient depending on displacement. Totals run from 300,000 to several million rubles.
Important: starting December 1, 2025, 160 hp became the threshold for the reduced utilization fee. Factor this into your model and trim choice.Customs processing fee
From January 1, 2026, the customs processing fee ranges from 1,231 to 21,344 RUB depending on vehicle value.
Total cost formula
Total customs clearance = Unified duty + Utilization fee + Customs processing feeUse our calculator instead of doing this by hand: kdltrade.ru/auto/calculator.
Step 6: SBKTS and eVIN
After customs clearance, the car must be certified. Without it, registration is impossible.
What SBKTS is
SBKTS (Vehicle Design Safety Certificate) confirms that the imported car meets safety requirements and may be used on Russian roads. To get an SBKTS, the car is inspected at an accredited test lab. They check:
- Brakes
- Lighting
- Exhaust emissions (for ICE)
- Safety systems
- Compliance with the Customs Union technical regulations
What eVIN is
eVIN (electronic vehicle passport) is a digital document that replaced the paper PTS. Without it, GIBDD registration is impossible.eVIN is issued based on the SBKTS and the customs declaration.
Cost and timing
- SBKTS: 15,000 to 35,000 RUB
- eVIN: from 600 RUB
- Full SBKTS + eVIN turnkey package: 45,000 to 60,000 RUB
- Timing: 1–3 business days
We handle SBKTS and eVIN — they are included in our turnkey service.
Step 7: GIBDD registration
The final stage. Once you have the eVIN, you can register the car.
Required documents
- Russian passport
- eVIN (electronic, verified in the database)
- Customs declaration (copy)
- Sales contract
- OSAGO insurance policy
- Proof of state fee payment
State fees
- Registration with new plates: 2,850 RUB
- Registration without new plates (transit plates available): 850 RUB
Procedure
1. Buy OSAGO (online possible)
2. Pay the state fee
3. Book a GIBDD slot via Gosuslugi
4. Vehicle inspection at GIBDD
5. Receive the registration certificate (STS) and plates
The whole procedure takes 1 day.
Real examples: turnkey cost from China
Example 1: BYD Han L EV (electric)
| Cost item | Amount |
|---|---|
| China price (EV trim, 601 km range) | 2,750,000 RUB |
| Hunchun – Vladivostok delivery | 65,000 RUB |

Note: BYD Han L EV exceeds 160 hp, so the utilization fee is calculated at commercial rates. This affects total cost significantly. For maximum savings, consider sub-160 hp models.Example 2: Haval Jolion (gasoline, 1.5T, 150 hp)
| Cost item | Amount |
|---|---|
| China price (Premium trim) | 1,200,000 RUB |

Frequently asked questions
Can I import a car not sold in Russia?
Yes. That's one of the main advantages. Many models are sold only in China and are not officially imported to Russia: BYD Han L AWD, top-trim Zeekr 7X, Li Auto L9, NIO ET7. We import any model.
How long does the entire process take?
From model selection to plates at GIBDD: 14 to 30 days. Of which:
- Search and inspection: 1–3 days
- Delivery to Vladivostok: 3–5 days
- Customs clearance: 3–5 business days
- SBKTS and eVIN: 1–3 days
- Russian transport (if needed): 7–14 days
Does the warranty apply to imported Chinese cars?
The factory warranty does not apply in Russia. However, we provide our own warranty. Many brands (Chery, Haval, Geely) have a developed Russian service network, so service is not an issue.
Which yuan rate is used?
We lock the rate at contract signing. All settlements are in rubles — you don't carry FX risk. Current yuan rate: about 12.8–13.2 RUB per yuan (April 2026).
Can I import a used car from China?
Yes, but with caveats. Cars over 3 years old are taxed at different rates (per cm³). Often a new car is the better deal. We will calculate both options and show which is cheaper.
Do I need to travel to China in person?
No. The whole process is remote. You select the car by photo and video, sign the contract digitally, pay by transfer. We handle the rest.
What if the car is damaged in transit?
All cars are insured during transport. In case of damage, you receive full compensation for repair cost or vehicle replacement.
Bottom line: is it worth importing a car from China in 2026?
In short — yes, with the right approach. Things to remember:
- Real savings — 300,000 to 700,000 RUB on popular models
- Wider choice — models unavailable at Russian dealers
- Predictable process — all costs are calculated up front, no surprises
- The main saving driver — power up to 160 hp. This unlocks the reduced utilization fee and dramatically cuts customs cost
The most important thing is to work with a company physically in China that controls every stage. KDL Group is in Hunchun, 60 km from the Russian border, and is accountable for every car at every step.
