Chinese construction equipment 2024–2025: who replaced the European brands
Overview of XCMG, SANY, LiuGong, Zoomlion, Shantui, Shacman in Russia after the exit of Caterpillar, Komatsu and Volvo CE. Segments, prices, lead times, Hunchun logistics and EAEU certification.
How Chinese brands became the mainstream in Russia
Until 2022, Russian construction sites were dominated by Caterpillar, Komatsu, Volvo CE, Liebherr, JCB and Hitachi. After the exit of Western distributors and the halt of parts supply, the market quickly reorganized around Chinese makers. Per industry reviews (os1.ru, exkavator.ru), Chinese brands captured over 70% of road-construction equipment imports in 2024, and 90–97% in some segments (front loaders, tracked compactors, JCB-class backhoes).
This shift is more than swapping suppliers. Over the past decade Chinese plants have moved from "cheap copies" to a full engineering school. XCMG and SANY now compete with Caterpillar and Komatsu on global markets, not just take their share in Russia. For Russian buyers, 2025–2026 is the moment to consider Chinese equipment not as a stopgap, but as the main choice.
Six brands that hold the market
XCMG (徐工)
Headquartered in Xuzhou, Jiangsu province. One of the largest construction equipment makers globally by revenue (top 5). Lineup ranges from 1.5-ton mini-excavators to 400-ton mining machines, mobile cranes of all classes, tower cranes, asphalt rollers, road milling machines. On the Russian market, XCMG historically has the broadest dealer network among Chinese brands. Excavators in the 20–25 ton class (XE215, XE235) and 35–50 ton class (XE370, XE490) cover 80% of typical commercial-development and quarry-mining tasks.
Strengths — volume and unification with the rest of the lineup, broad parts availability, work through an official Russian rep. Weakness — base versions lag SANY flagships in electronics and cabin comfort.
SANY (三一重工)
Headquartered in Changsha, Hunan province. The largest private construction-equipment maker in China, second globally in excavator sales (after Caterpillar). The main differentiator — engineering level: the Sani YC platform (SY215C, SY245H, SY365H, SY500H) scores high in independent reliability and fuel-economy tests. SANY is also strong in mobile cranes (SAC series) and concrete pumps — a separate segment where the company is a global leader.
Strength — balance of power/comfort/economy. Weakness — pricing 8–15% above XCMG in equivalent classes.
LiuGong (柳工)
Headquartered in Liuzhou, Guangxi. Historically strong in wheel loaders — the ZL30, ZL50, ZL60 series dominate in China and in exports. In 2024 LiuGong absorbed parts of Dressta technology (a Polish bulldozer maker, acquired in 2012), strengthening its position in heavy-earth machinery. Excavators 9150E, 9225E, 9350E are solid mid-class machines focused on reliability rather than innovation.
Strength — export focus and flexible configuration for Russian conditions (Arctic package, reinforced cabin heater). Weakness — conservative electronics, no premium screens or telematics.
SDLG (临工, a Volvo CE subsidiary)
Headquartered in Linyi, Shandong. SDLG (Shandong Lingong) is formally a Chinese brand, but Volvo Construction Equipment has held a controlling stake since 2006. In effect, it is "the people's Volvo" — components shared with Volvo CE (Deutz/Volvo engines, Kawasaki/Rexroth hydraulics) at a Chinese price. The lineup focuses on wheel loaders (LG933, LG938, LG956, LG968), excavators (E635F, E680F, E6135F) and graders. Especially popular in quarry mining and road construction.
Strength — Volvo-grade components at Chinese prices. Weakness — Russian service network narrower than XCMG/SANY; parts go through the Volvo-SDLG official chain.
Shantui (山推)
Headquartered in Jining, Shandong. Leader in tracked bulldozers: in 2024 Shantui's share of Russian bulldozer imports exceeded 60%. Base models SD13, SD16, SD22, SD32 are direct analogs of Caterpillar D5/D6/D7/D8 by drawbar pull class. Technologies were licensed from Komatsu in the 1980s, refined and localized since. In 2025 Shantui expanded into tracked excavators and graders, but the core remains bulldozers.
Strength — focus and the 40-year engineering school in bulldozers. Weakness — narrow lineup outside the core segment.
Shacman and Chinese dump trucks (陕汽)
For construction tasks, dump trucks matter just as much. Shacman (SHAANXI), Sinotruk (HOWO T5G, T7H, N7W), FAW Jiefang and Dongfeng cover 80% of CN→RU dump-truck imports. 8x4 chassis with 20–25 m³ bodies are the main flow for quarries and construction sites. Strength — affordability with adequate payload. Weakness — cabin and electrical durability below European Scania/MAN, plus stricter service intervals required.
A separate review of 6x4 long-haul tractors (HOWO T7H, Shacman X3000/X5000, FAW J7, Sitrak C7H) is in «Chinese trucks 2026»: comparison of engines, cabins, scenarios, and chassis certification for GIBDD registration.
Comparison by key class

Price benchmarks: SD16 — from 120,000 CNY, SD22 — from 180,000 CNY, SD32 — from 280,000 CNY. In RUB after full clearance — 2.6 to 6.2M RUB.
Road and asphalt rollers
XCMG XS263, XS335, Sany SSR220-8, LiuGong CLG6122E — single-drum vibratory rollers 20–35 t for sub-base. For asphalt — XCMG XS183 and SANY SSR120C-10. Chinese rollers are essentially 100% of Russian imports in this segment: after BOMAG and Hamm exited, the replacement came from China.
Logistics through Hunchun — why it matters for construction equipment
For heavy equipment, the supply channel determines both cost and timing. Two main CN→RU corridors:
Hunchun – Makhalino (rail) — direct border crossing into Primorsky Krai. For equipment from Jilin, Liaoning, Shandong (where 70% of XCMG, Shantui, SDLG, LiuGong production is concentrated) this is the short leg: 2–3 days by rail to Vladivostok, then container or open-train to Moscow/Yekaterinburg/Novosibirsk in 12–16 days. Total 14–22 days from factory to Russian warehouse. Manzhouli – Zabaykalsk (rail) — main corridor from Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei. Optimal for central-China equipment. Transit — 25–35 days, 8–12% more expensive due to longer rail leg in Russia. Sea via Vladivostok/Nakhodka — for equipment from southern China (Guangxi, Yunnan, Guangdong). Transit — 35–50 days, cheaper freight, but adds inland logistics time. For XCMG (Xuzhou), SANY (Changsha), SDLG (Linyi), Shantui (Jining), LiuGong (Liuzhou) factories, the optimum in 2026 is Hunchun or Manzhouli depending on assembly region. That is why we treat the Hunchun border channel as primary for northeastern factories.
Certification and customs clearance
Chinese construction equipment imported to the EAEU falls under TR CU 010/2011 "On the safety of machines and equipment". The main document — an EAEU declaration or certificate of conformity, issued based on tests at an accredited lab. For most serial XCMG, SANY, LiuGong, Shantui, SDLG models the certificates already exist — just request a copy from the manufacturer or official rep.
Separately:
- Self-propelled equipment with a cabin (excavators, loaders, bulldozers, rollers) — needs SBKTS (Vehicle Design Safety Certificate) for Gostekhnadzor registration.
- Truck chassis for dump trucks — full set for GIBDD registration: OTTS/SBKTS, vehicle title, utilization fee.
- Cranes (mobile, tower, gantry) — additional Rostekhnadzor approval and a crane passport per PB 10-382-00.
- Lifts, aerial work platforms, truck-mounted lifts — same: Rostekhnadzor + registration.
Document errors are a typical cause of customs delays. For construction equipment we plan 2–4 weeks for final certification in parallel with production and logistics.
2026 utilization fee on commercial equipment
Since 2024, the utilization fee on construction equipment and trucks is reviewed annually. Current 2026 rates depend on weight and machine type:
- Excavators 20–25 t — 500K to 1.2M RUB
- Wheel loaders 5 t — 450K to 950K RUB
- Bulldozers 16–22 t — 400K to 900K RUB
- 8x4 dump trucks — 300K to 650K RUB (depends on emissions class and weight)
Calculate the total cost up front — the utilization fee is often comparable to customs duty plus VAT combined.
Acceptance and commissioning
A separate topic that is often underestimated. Chinese makers ship machines with minimal PDI (pre-delivery inspection) — basic fluids, level checks, cable connections. But the first start-up on the customer's site requires:
- Hydraulic-circuit and pressure check.
- Track tension and play check (for tracked equipment).
- Initial 0-hour service after the first 50 hours — change of hydraulic fluid, gearbox oil, filters.
- ECU reflash for Russian fuel (for Cummins/Isuzu engines — usually unnecessary; for Chinese Yunnei/Weichai — sometimes a tune is needed).
We plan 3–5 days for commissioning and operator training on site — this prevents typical "infant mortality" issues in the first month.
Closing note
Chinese construction equipment in 2026 is not a "compromise" — it is the de facto main choice for most tasks in Russia. XCMG, SANY, LiuGong, SDLG and Shantui cover all key classes of commercial and quarry equipment, at prices 30–50% below European analogs (when those were still available) and with shorter lead times.
The key nuance — choosing the right channel and a competent broker. Equipment from Jilin/Liaoning/Shandong arrives via Hunchun in 14–22 days; add 2–4 weeks for certification and SBKTS, and from contract to a working machine you get 6–10 weeks. That is faster than waiting for a used European excavator via parallel import.
