Chinese trucks 2026: HOWO, Shacman, FAW, Sitrak — what to choose for the fleet
Comparison of 6x4 long-haul tractors from the four main Chinese brands on the Russian market. FOB prices, engines, cabins, Hunchun logistics, and OTTS/SBKTS certification.
How Chinese tractors became the mainstream Russian fleet
After the 2022 exit of Scania, Volvo Trucks, MAN, Mercedes-Benz and DAF from the official Russian market, the long-haul segment reorganized faster than construction equipment. The reason is simple: a tractor is an amortizable asset with a short replacement cycle (5–8 years), and fleets could not wait. Per FCS data and industry reviews, Chinese commercial-vehicle imports exceeded $1.4 billion in 2024, and exports of vehicles from Jilin province alone to Russia grew over 5x in 2023 (Jilin provincial government data via english.gov.cn).
By early 2026, four brands hold ~80% of the 6x4 long-haul segment in Russia: HOWO (Sinotruk), Shacman, FAW, and the premium Sitrak — effectively the "older brother" of HOWO inside Sinotruk. The rest is split between Dongfeng, JAC, Foton and "grey" parallel imports of European trucks. The difference between the four leaders is not "better/worse," but use case.
Four brands covering the long-haul segment
Sinotruk HOWO T7H
Sinotruk HQ — Jinan, Shandong province. HOWO T7H 6x4 is the highest-volume Chinese tractor on the Russian market: FOB price benchmark — 540,000–680,000 CNY for the base trim, MC11 or Weichai WP12 engine, 353 kW / 480 hp, Euro 5. Curb weight ~9 t.
Strengths — broadest dealer network and parts inventory in Russia, components familiar to CIS mechanics (many elements inherited from the 1990s licensed Steyr platform), high resale liquidity. Weaknesses — cabin simpler than Sitrak C7H; electronics need reflashing for Russian service-station software.
Shacman X3000 / X5000
Shanxi Automobile (Shacman) HQ — Xi'an, Shaanxi province. X3000 (base) and X5000 (premium) lineup, 6x4 with Weichai WP12 or WP13 engines, 353–397 kW / 480–540 hp. FOB price — 520,000–720,000 CNY. Curb weight ~8.9 t.
Strengths — the base Weichai WP12 is one of the most repair-friendly engines in class, the reinforced frame handles regular 10–15% overload (a common reality on quarry routes), the X5000 in premium trim approaches Sitrak in comfort. Weaknesses — dealer network denser in central Russia than beyond the Urals; X3000 and X5000 trims differ down to the powertrain — VIN check before purchase is mandatory.
FAW J7
FAW HQ — Changchun, Jilin province. For the Hunchun corridor, FAW is geographically the closest of the four: Changchun → Hunchun → Makhalino is a short rail leg. The flagship long-haul FAW J7 6x4: in-house FAW CA6DM3 engine, 353–397 kW / 480–540 hp, Euro 5. FOB price — 560,000–740,000 CNY. Curb weight ~9.1 t.
Strengths — factory assembly in Jilin (minimal transit to Russia), J7 cabin ergonomics on par with Sitrak, in-house CA6DM3 engine without licensing constraints. Weaknesses — Russian service network density below HOWO and Shacman; CA6DM3 parts come only through FAW dealers, independent suppliers haven't built up SKUs yet.
Sitrak C7H — Sinotruk's premium line
Sitrak (汕德卡) — premium brand within Sinotruk, co-developed with MAN. Cabin — MAN-derived series, MC13 engine (MAN D26 license), 397 kW / 540 hp, Euro 5. FOB price — 680,000–820,000 CNY, the highest in the group. Curb weight ~9.2 t. Fuel tanks 600+400 L, optional ZF TraXon transmission.
Strengths — best cabin quality in the group, MC13 declared rebuild interval 1.2M+ km, default trim closer to 2010s European level. Weaknesses — price 20–30% above mass-market HOWO/Shacman; premium service requires a dealer — a "garage" mechanic without Sinotruk diagnostics is less effective.
Comparison by use case
Long-haul (Moscow – Russian Far East, Urals – Siberia)
Critical factors — service life and cabin comfort (the driver lives in it 11+ months). Optimal — Sitrak C7H or FAW J7 in top trim. HOWO T7H works, but the cabin is inferior and wears faster under 24/7 use.
Universal fleet of 10+ trucks, container and tarpaulin logistics
Service and resale liquidity dominate. Here HOWO T7H covers 80% of scenarios: most predictable cost of ownership, densest dealer coverage, simplest replacement on write-off.
Quarry and border logistics (Hunchun – Vladivostok – Chita, port runs in the Far East)
Overload, rough roads, dust. Shacman X3000 works here: reinforced frame, Weichai WP12 tolerates imperfect fuel, engine parts cheaper than MC11/MC13. For runs from Changchun via Makhalino, FAW J7 is also a fit — the closest plant to the border crossing.
Logistics through Hunchun for tractors
Two basic delivery methods to Russia:
Rail and car-carrier via Hunchun – Makhalino. The shortest corridor for plants in Jilin (FAW) and Shandong (Sinotruk). Trucks ship by rail-mounted carrier to Makhalino, or under their own power after customs clearance in Primorsky Krai. Factory-to-warehouse — 14–22 days for machines fitting the rail gauge. Primorsky transit gives a 10–20-day advantage over sea delivery via Shanghai — thanks to the short leg and no port handling. Sea freight via Vladivostok / Nakhodka. For Shanxi (Shacman, Xi'an) and southern assemblies. Transit — 35–50 days. Economics work for batches of 10+ trucks per platform-container. Certification: OTTS, SBKTS, 2026 utilization fee
The key difference from construction equipment — truck chassis are registered with GIBDD, not Gostekhnadzor. Full import-and-registration package:
- OTTS or SBKTS for one-off import. Vehicle Type Approval per TR CU 018/2011 "On the safety of wheeled vehicles." For serial HOWO, Shacman, FAW, Sitrak in base trim, OTTS is usually held by the manufacturer or importer — request a copy. For non-standard trim or one-off import — SBKTS via an accredited lab.
- Electronic title (eVIN). Issued in the SEP system based on OTTS/SBKTS.
- 2026 utilization fee. Rates on tractors and semi-trailer chassis are reviewed annually; the range depends on engine displacement, emissions class and year of make. Benchmark for heavy 6x4 Euro 5 chassis — comparable to 8x4 dump trucks (in our calculator, 300K–650K RUB, see
src/data/customs.ts). Exact figures — strictly per the current Russian government decree on the date of clearance. - GLONASS. Mandatory for commercial-vehicle registration. Plan as a separate line item.

What to verify on receipt
- Brakes — disc or drum. Long-haul priority — disc on all axles; quarry use — drum is more reliable (less sensitive to dirt).
- Cabin heater and engine pre-heater — mandatory for Russia. Export trims often have Webasto-equivalent Chinese units — verify it is the unit, not "a mounting point for a future heater."
- Sleeping berth — T7H, X3000 and J7 differ in height, locker volume, presence of a lower bunk. For long-haul, look for High/Hi-Line variants.
- ECU reflash for Russian fuel. Chinese diesels (especially Weichai WP12/WP13) are sometimes tuned for Euro 5 fuel with sulfur ≤10 ppm; Russian diesel is ≤10 ppm per GOST, but real-world deviations occur. For fleets working outside major cities — verify fuel-system tuning before signing acceptance.
